In many Northern Quebec communities, organic waste goes to landfill or open-pit burning, with crowding, animals and pollution as a result. Distance, climate, equipment and transport costs make other options difficult.
Inukjuak, an Inuit community on the coast of Hudson Bay, wanted to do things differently and improve the management of its northern landfill site.
The solutionWith the Kativik Regional Government and Éco-conseil Symbiose, the Inukjuamiut acquired their own composting system in fall 2023. It is the first BROME system placed inside insulated and heated maritime containers, which protects the operators and the process from the cold and keeps animals away.
The system is designed for maximum automation in a small space, to reduce heating needs: a mixer pre-treats the organics, a conveyor carries them to a BROME rotating composter equipped with a hood and a sifter.
According to the feasibility study by Éco-conseil Symbiose, the site can divert about 2 tonnes of organics and 600 kg of cardboard a week from the landfill, from homes, businesses and institutions.
