With Quebec planning to ban organics from landfill, Landrienne needed a long-term solution for its organic waste. The site is shared with Saint-Marc-de-Figuery, La Corne and Saint-Félix-de-Dalquier: 3,800 people in 1,600 homes. Barraute, around 2,000 people, joined the collection in fall 2021.
The site is close to wetlands, so leachate from open piles or windrows would have had to be managed to prevent water contamination.
The solutionA BROME thermophilic rotary drum system was installed in January 2020 to process the source-separated organics from the door-to-door collection. It consists of two BROME 632 composters (6 × 32 ft), a mixer for pre-treatment, a conveyor, fume hoods and breathable bulk bags at the exit of each composter.
The system is installed in a hangar, protected from extreme weather and wild animals, and takes much less space than windrows. Compost is ready in a few weeks rather than months and cures in storage bags until the public works departments and citizens use it.
Director General Mario Tardif explains the choice of equipment and the daily operations in the video.
