Listuguj, a growing Mi’gmaq community of about 2,000 people across the bridge from Campbellton, wanted to keep its organic matter in the community, reduce transport costs and landfill tipping fees, and produce compost for its own soils.
The solutionDeveloped with the First Nations of Quebec and Labrador Sustainable Development Institute (FNQLSDI), the system has been running since July 2022. It combines a BROME 632 rotary drum composter, a 140 cubic-foot PATZ mixer, two conveyors and an automatic rotary sifter. The community added storage and curing bays, one of the first BROME projects to do so.
Compostable materials are collected three times a week in lidded buckets with a red latch that shows when the truck has passed. Process parameters and compost characteristics are tracked at every phase.
The FNQLSDI and Brome Compost trained the operator, and BROME’s compost technician followed up regularly after commissioning.
