When Jean-François Grenier contacted Brome Compost in 2023, he wanted a simpler way to handle mortalities on his farm: fewer manipulations, no more freezers and no more visits from the renderer.
With 135 sows in a farrow-to-finish operation, eliminating the renderer was also a matter of biosecurity, to protect his production site and his animals.
The solutionThe Brome Compost team supported the project from the needs assessment to the start-up. The solution was a BROME 416 rotary composter, which manages carcasses all year round.
The composter has been running since August 2023. Mortalities are composted as they occur, the renderer no longer comes to the farm, and the finished compost is spread on the farm’s fields.
“It met my initial objectives of eliminating mortality on my farm as and when needed, and of no longer requiring the services of the renderer. More than that, the compost produced on the farm allows me to fertilize my fields.”
Jean-François Grenier, owner, Ferme Porcine du Boisé inc.
