City of Bentonville
Bentonville, Arkansas, USA · Since 2023
The city moved its biosolids from open windrows to six BROME 632 composters. Two years later: up to 90% less odour, zero complaints and double the capacity.

With landfill and incineration no longer an option for its biosolids, Bentonville composted them in aerated windrows on about 10 acres, turned with a SCARAB machine. The site processed around 600 tonnes of biosolids a year.
Windrows depended on the weather, needed a lot of space and labour, and generated odours and complaints from neighbours, while equipment was ageing and population growth kept increasing the volumes.
The project had three goals: renovate the existing composting site, reduce its footprint, and radically reduce odour problems.
The solutionBrome Compost designed a made-to-measure in-vessel system of six BROME 632 rotating composters, fed automatically by an industrial mixer and a set of conveyors. The mixer homogenizes the material and reduces its volume before composting. At the exit, conveyors carry the compost to a pile for maturation.
The system handles more than 20 tons of biosolids a week, year-round, with controlled temperature, moisture and residence time and 8 to 9 day treatment cycles. It was phased in after pilot testing.
