A BROME 616 bought in 2012 to stop using the renderer is still composting the farm’s mortalities and placentas more than 12 years later.
Luc Loranger, a farrow-to-finish operator, wanted to stop relying on rendering services: carcass collection can spread pathogens and contaminants from farm to farm and put the whole herd at risk. Better odour management was another goal.
He was keen to compost but, by his own account, knew little about it at the start.
The solutionPaul Larouche recommended a BROME 616 composter sized for the farm’s annual mortalities, and supported the project through its implementation.
More than 12 years later, the same BROME 616 is still in operation, with a few minor modifications as the farm’s buildings evolved. It handles mortalities and placentas and takes little time to operate.
“We just wouldn’t do without it.”
